BOOSTXL-DRV8323RH: Gate resistor and DRV8323 damaged

For your IDRIVE and VDS setting are one of the resistors unpopulated? if so which one? What is your desired setting?

I think a PCB review might be a little difficult, I only have access to Altium so while you can send a Gerber file I cant actively highlight traces. So if you have an Altium file that would be great!

Thanks for your support, the VDS and IDRIVE were referenced to my BOOSTXL-DRV8323RH + LAUNCHXL-F280025C combo board both resistors weren't unpopulated without any issues.

My MOSFET gate charge Qsw = 8.1nC, is there any problem ? and gate resistor footprint is 0402

Do you think unpopulated IDRIVE setting, the gate current + 0402 gate resistor footprint didn't withstand (yes the gate resistor was burn damaged) ?

I use KICAD, so that I can send you the Gerber files.

Please help since it's my third boards damaged

Thanks for the information, I will take a look and adjust my IDRIVE setting starting from Low to High 

However I still have some questions :  

1. On boostxl-drv8323rh board there's both resistors unpopulated that's mean is Hi-Z right ? and the MOSFET CSD88599Q5DC on its Qgd is 7nc 

based on the formula it's  58 / 29 ns and without gate resistor, it's look like switching faster than my setting, why not damaged ? 

2. as per IDRIVE Do's and Don'ts information, should I need to add gate resistor (I am using 20 Ohm) ?

Hi Danny, 

I would try your IDRIVE setting without a gate resistor for now and see how the device behaves.

It's unclear why the Boostxl didnt experience damage with a low Qgd and high IDRIVE settings. On the boostxl that you have can you confirm that R1 and R5 are unpopulated? From the hardware design files it seems like these boards already have both those resistors populated.

yes both R1 and R5 are unpopulated, at the end my boostxl didn't survive, don't know if it's related, but anyway I am focus on my CUSTOM board right now, last time damaged might caused by 240mA IDRIVE current through 0402 footprint 20Ohm resistor, do the maths 0.24 * 0.24 * 20 = 1.152A ... it's definitely damage the gate resistor. 

I will do my full load road test of my custom board later this week, this time will lower the IDRIVE and without gate resistor to see if it can survive and will increase IDRIVE to Hi-Z without gate resistor to simulate and compare stock boostxl board !

Hi Danny,

R1 and R5 look populated in the picture? Did you remove them or does this picture not capture the EVM with unpopulated R1 and R5?

Hi Yara, 

At first I didn't know or care about R1 and R5 so it's remain unpopulated on board, and with this combo boards (BOOSTXL-DRV8323RH + LAUNCHXL-F280025C) I added my codes, added 100V 2200uF capacitor, replace shunt resistor with 0.001Ohm, powered by 10s Lipo 42v battery, to be honest I would like to test its limit ... 

with this settings I road tested every night for 3 months just concentrate on coding, like throttle response, torque sensor signal treatment etc. util I have confident to move on CUSTOM BOARD.
