DRV104: Recommend high-side pwm solenoid driver

Tool/software:

Designing a ramp-up/Ramp-down PWM driver circuit for proportional valve. DRV104 is close to what is needed in this design, but would like to know if there is another part which can support up to 3A and more suited to both the ramp-up and ramp-down functionality. This is not a uC implementation, so DRV104 is attractive from simplicity POV, although a bit old.

Hi Craig,

The DRV104 is currently the only solenoid driver to support a proportional valve. We have other solenoid drivers that can support ON/OFF, latching, and non-latching but not proportional control.

We might have another driver that could work instead.

What is the application?

By ramp-up/ramp-down do you mean PWM control of input signals?

What are your voltage requirements?

Hi David,

Sorry for the slow response, I've been out of plant. The application is: controlled ramp up/down of proportional hydraulic valves to prevent hammering. So yes, PWM is desired. In this particular case, there is no controller to do the PWM, so the circuitry will need to be self-contained. Input voltage will likely be ~24VDC nominal. The coils on these cartridge style valves are typically 500ma to 2A, depending on vendor, etc. I'm expecting ramp durations in the <500mS range. There are off-the shelf products such as LE-PSX cards, however there are limitations on how much space is available and it's desired to reduce cost/valve by reducing total functionality to just ramping.

Should have mentioned that this is for mobile, so although typical voltage is 24VDC, voltages can be significantly higher e.g. >30VDC. Perhaps a motor driver configuration/controller (e.g. DRV8935) would be more suitable using a generated PWM input signal.

Hi Craig,

I agree with you that the DRV8935 would be a more suitable choice. It is a newer device that offers more features and control.

I looked at the 8955 and it looks like it's strictly a low-side driver, or am I missing something? In this application, the proportional valve is remote and I would prefer to use high-side drive so the control line to the valve is off unless driving. I suppose I could put a switch on the power line to the valve and only enable it when driving, but is there a more straightforward solution with a high-side driver?

Hi Craig,

The DRV8955 can be configured to switch high-side or low-side.

However, the DRV89xx-Q1 family of devices offers configurable high-side and low-side drivers as well. This family starts with DRV8904-Q1 (4 half-bridges) and goes to DRV8912-Q1 (12 half-bridges).
