DRV7308: Help Understanding POC Motor Control

Part Number: DRV7308

Tool/software:

Hello. I am totally new to BLDC design. I'm a 40 year experienced EE circuit designer. I have been through the plethora of introductory support presentations. TRAP commutation seems straightforward. I am lost with FOC. Are the phase currents sampled by an A/D at a rate much higher than the commutation rate? Are the discrete control loops running at a much higher rate than the phase frequency, hence, sinusoidal discrete waveforms are being generated and applied to the phases?  I hope I don't come off as naive. I just need to be set on the right path. Thanks
