DRV8300: Output short circuit protection

Part Number: DRV8300

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

If the following conditions occur, What DRV8300 protections or actions does the DRV8300 have?

  1. DRV8300 input signal short (any pin)
  2. DRV8300 output signal short(any pin)
  3. DRV8300 pin SHA, SHB, SHC shot to PVDD
  4. DRV8300 pin SHA, SHB, SHC shot to GND
  5. Bootstrap capacitor Specification selection

  • Hi Kevin,

    Thank you for your question!

The DRV8300 is designed as a lower cost gate driver and does not have many protection features, such as OCP, VDS, and short to supply/GND protection.

However,  the device offers protection against input shorting:

DRV8300 input signal short (any pin)

The DRV8300 comes equipped with both deadtime and shoot-through (cross conduction) protection that protects the device against turning on both high and low-side MOSFETSs if the inputs get shorted together while HIGH (see section 8.3.1.1.2 Deadtime and Cross-Conduction Prevention in the datasheet)

You have the option to insert deadtime between MOSFETS switching to reduce the probability of overcurrent,  however,

Regarding bootstrap capacitor sizing,  you want to select your GVDD capacitor to be >10x the BOOTx capacitor in order to avoid issues on startup and during operation.

Please refer to section 9.2.2 in the datasheet for more thorough details on BOOTx capacitor selection.

If you would like a suggestion into other DRV devices that provide additional features,  please feel free to reach out again with any relevant system design considerations.

Hope this information has been helpful!

    Best Regards,

    -Joshua
