MCT8316Z: Current sensing

Part Number: MCT8316Z
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MCT8316A, DRV8306, DRV8323

Tool/software:

hi team,

my customer is using MCT8316ZR and they need to read out the phase current  to do torque control. Can MCT8316ZR read out the current? or do they have any ways to read out the current? thanks!

  • Hi Zoey,

Unfortunately the MCT8316Z does not have an output pin or a register to read out the phase current. To read the phase current an external CSA will have to be used or a different device such as the MCT8316A or MCF8316C. The MCF8316C does offer the integration of a current loop which can be used for torque control (see section 7.3.8 of the datasheet).

  • Hi Joshua,

    Thanks for your reply.

But customer need SPI interface . Do u have any better advise?

  • I think an external Current Sense Amplifier (CSA) would be needed in this case then. Using an external CSA with the MCT8316Z, in-line current sensing would need to be used since it is an internal FET device. An explication of inline current sensing can be found here: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/sboa172/sboa172.pdf#page=5

An alternative solution could be to use the DRV8306 (HW variant only) which is external FET. The fact that this device is external FET would allow the customer to instead use low side current sensing.

If the customer does not require the FG pin feedback or has another method to measure this already, then devices like the DRV8323 maybe worth looking at since they have a 1x PWM mode and integrate 3x CSA which all have a respective pin for output.

If these recommendations still cannot meet the customers requirements, could you send me an email so we can further discuss the customers requirements and potential solutions?

    Regards,

    Joshua
