DRV8830 Questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8830

I have two question regarding the DRV8830. What is the "Brake" condition in the H bridge logic table on pg 8 of the data sheet? Secondly, the voltage output minimum according to the table on Pg 10 of the data sheet is 0.48 volts, how can I get zero volts out without going into the standby or coast mode? I believe that the standby mode will give zero volts out but I don't like the 12 msec ramp up time to full pwm duty. Thanks for your help. Jay Walker

  • Jay,

BRAKE Condition: DRV8830 goes in to Brake mode when both the control bits IN1 and IN2 are set to 1. In this mode, both High Side FETs are turned ON. The motor would stall as there is no differential voltage across its coil.

0 Volts: 0 volts can be applied across the motor by either putting it in Coast mode or Brake mode. You dont have to be worried about 12 ms ramp up time very much. The 12 ms is the maximum time the IC takes to go from 0V to 5V. i.e. from 0% duty cycle to 100 % duty cycle. If the voltage change is lesser, say from 0.9 to 0, then the ramp (down) time is much lesser.

    Thanks
