DRV8871: Bulk capacitance

Part Number: DRV8871

Tool/software:

I have a doubt in using bulk capacitance.

I have used 47 uF tantalum capacitor (bulk capacitance) in the Vm pin

But the size is little big. I can't use it.

Can I use ceramic capacitor in that pin with the same value as 47 uF?

  • Hello Gowri,

Thank you for the post. Yes you can use a ceramic capacitor for 47 uF. Ensure the voltage and capacitance rating are matched correctly because ceramic capacitors derate dramatically with voltage meaning if you were using a 47 uF ceramic rated for 24 V with a 12 V system the capacitance will be much lower than 47 uF. If you ensure there will be no derating you are good with using ceramic capacitor. Rarely ceramic capacitors may result with ringing or oscillation just double check this is not the case by looking at the VM voltage with an oscilloscope.
