DRV8821EVM: Can i use the GUI for 8x motor with 4x of the DRV8821-23EVM-001

Part Number: DRV8821EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8821

Tool/software:

Hi,

I would like to use DRV8821 in my current project but need to evaluate it.  Using the demo board DRV8821-23EVM-001 it has 2 x independent  motor control outputs.  And there is a Labview GUI available that TI allows usings.  How can i configure the Gui and my setup to run 8x motors. I was thinking 4 x of the DRV8821-23EVM and then 4 usb connecting to laptop and then 8x stepper motor.

Any idea will this work. Otherwise any other thoughts?

Regards,

Michael

  • Hi Michael,

    Thank you for the post.

Only one instantiation of the GUI app can run at a time. Multiple GUIs are not supported. You'll be able to control only one GUI at a time.

You have to create you own control signals including STEP and DIR for each of the AB and CD of each driver IC you'd want using an external microcontroller via the test points on the EVM. By permanently connecting the reset of the onboard MCU you can disable it from controlling the driver, see below. You'll still have to plug in USB for each of the EVMs because the USB supplies 5V 5VCC for onboard 3.3 V VDD supply. See EVM schematic in the SLVC590.ZIP hardware design files downloaded from the EVM webpage. Thanks.
