DRV8214: Need Body Diode Characteristics

Part Number: DRV8214

Tool/software:

Dear Team,

I am using the DRV8214 motor driver in my project and need additional details about the integrated body diodes for accurate design considerations. While the datasheet provides the forward voltage (VSD), the following parameters are critical for my design and are not included in the datasheet:

1. Reverse Recovery Time (trr)
2. Maximum Continuous Current Handling Capability
3. Peak Current Capability
4. Reverse Leakage Current
This information is crucial for determining whether external flyback diodes are necessary in my design. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in providing these details.

  • Hey Divya,

The body diodes are rated for the same current as the FET.  External flyback diodes are not necessary when using TI motor drivers because of this.

You're welcome to order an EVM and try it out for yourself: DRV8214EVM Evaluation board | TI.com

    Best,

    Jacob

  • Dear Jacob,

Thank you for your response regarding the body diode characteristics of the DRV8214. While I appreciate the clarification on the current handling capacity of the body diodes, for accurate system design and compliance, I require formal documentation or an updated datasheet from TI specifying the following:

    1. Reverse Recovery Time (trr)
    2. Reverse Leakage Current
    3. Peak Current Capability
    4. Maximum Continuous Current Handling Capability (reiterating to ensure alignment with the datasheet).

This information is critical for validating the design and ensuring the reliability of our system. A verbal confirmation, while helpful, does not suffice for critical design decisions in high-reliability applications.

If these details are not presently available in the datasheet, kindly advise if TI can provide this information through an application note, technical reference, or an updated datasheet.

Looking forward to your support in this matter.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Divya,

I require formal documentation or an updated datasheet from TI specifying the following:

The requested parameters are not available for integrated MOSFETs in our ICs as datasheet parameters because they cannot be tested individually unlike discrete MOSFETs. For this reason these parameters are not available to share in the form of an official documentation.

All specifications for the DRV8214 specified in the datasheet includes these specifications for the integrated MOSFETs. Our IC design considered all these parameters for sure while designing this IC and qualified for the stated device performance specifications. The driver ICs peak current capability and continuous current handling capability is as per the datasheet. All datasheet parameters are tested and guaranteed for compliance unless otherwise specified. This specific device is designed and qualified for industrial grade applications. We do have other automotive qualified higher reliability products in our portfolio. We have gate drivers for BDC motor control which use external MOSFETs. You can pick a suitable MOSFET that complies with your applications specific needs if those are very important for your application.

TI also offer higher reliability products. Please review https://www.ti.com/support-quality/faqs/automotive-hirel-faqs.html and https://www.ti.com/applications/industrial/aerospace-defense/overview.html.

If these details are not presently available in the datasheet, kindly advise if TI can provide this information through an application note, technical reference, or an updated datasheet.

Regretfully, we cannot provide this information with any of these documents for this device. This is typical for our integrated MOSFETs motor drivers. Thank you for understanding.
