MCT8329EVM: Eval board having trouble keeping motor field aligned, I think

Part Number: MCT8329EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MCT8329A,

Tool/software:

I got a MCT8329EVM board because I'd like to use the MCT8329A chip for a line of motor controller units. I hooked the eval board up to a 4 pole 48V BLDC motor, and I think the chip is having some trouble estimating the position of the rotor field. That's just a guess based on my observations.

I'm using the MCT8329A_GUI on version 1.1.3. In the GUI, I went to "GUIDED TUNING SETTINGS" > "ESSENTIAL CONTROLS" > "RECOMMENDED DEFAULT VALUES" and pressed "RESTORE RECOMMENDED VALUES". I couldn't upload the JSON file for some reason, so let me know if it would be useful and I'll comment the text file or something below or message it to you directly. It's the default settings anyways.

When I turn the potentiometer slowly, the motor rotor will twice once, and then again about a second later, and then spin up for about half a second. Then, I get the controller fault "[LOSS OF SYNC]". Sometimes I get "[ABN_SPEED]" aka Abnormal Speed instead. Here's a video of the behavior from the motor.

I tried this EVM on a different motor, a BLDC outrunner motor, and the same behavior happened, so I it's something wrong with the EVM. Maybe a configuration or tuning thing, but I'm not where to look. I'd appreciate any and all help.

Thanks,

Kelvin

  • Thanks Venkatadri. I tried with a few different motors, from 500 to 1500 W, all at 48V, and the controller worked okay for one of the 1500 W motors, but pretty badly for smaller motors, as well as a different 1500 W BLDC motor. Changing OL_ACC_A2 from 0.005 seconds to 0.25 - 1 seconds helped a good bit and doing the same for OL_ACC_A1 helped a little. But the controller still had a really jerky speed control.

  • Hi Kelvin,

We will have verify the details shared by you . I will send procedure to address the issue.
