DRV8962: DRV8962 Parallel Outputs

Part Number: DRV8962
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8262, DRV8844

Tool/software:

I'm interested in paralleling DRV8962 outputs to allow for increased current to the load. Load in this case is a 50V resistive heater. Note that one side of the load would be grounded, so only the high-side FETs would be enabled and controlled via PWM.

What combination of paralleled outputs are allowed here? I noticed that in the EVM users manual (Sec. 8.1) , there is a provision for shorting outputs OUT1 to OUT3, and OUT2 to OUT4, but the datasheet (sec. 8.1.3.4) recommends shorting OUT1 to OUT2, and OUT3 to OUT4. Which is correct? Is it possible to short ALL outputs together?

Note that I plan to essentially disable the low-side FETs by setting the INx high and PWMing the ENx. That way only the high-side FETS would be enabled, minimizing shoot-through current.

  • Hi Michael,

    Thank you for your post.

In the DRV8962 any or all outputs and inputs can be connected in parallel like mentioned in the datasheet sec. 8.1.3.4. The provision in the EVM is specifically meant for the DRV8262 device, another variant of this family of devices. The EVM hardware is of common design for all devices in this family.

Understood. Note, with resistive loads such as an heater the internal current regulation will not be usable, which relies on inductance of the load for chopper based current regulation. You can control the average current by varying the duty cycle of the PWM. Thank you.

Is that also true for the DRV8844?

  • Hi Michael,

Is that also true for the DRV8844?

It is different for the DRV8844 because two source pins of the FETs are internally connected. Below info from its datasheet.
