DRV8323R: Inquiry: BLDC and Servo Motor Controller IC Recommendations

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8323R, DRV8161, DRV8770

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

The DRV8323R driver supports the BLDC motor.

Can you recommend a BLDC controller IC that supports both BLDC motors and servo motors?
Alternatively, is there a servo controller IC that can support both servo motors and BLDC motors?

Regards,
Lokesh

  • Hey Lokesh,

You can use a 3 phase motor driver (3 half bridges) to drive a BLDC motor or  servo motor (although the you wont need all the channels).

Are you aiming to drive both the servo and bldc motor with same driver? If so we might need to look at different device with enough channels.

Could you comment on your motor voltage and motor current requirement? This would help us identify which devices would work for this application.

    Best,

    Akshay

  • Hi Akshay ,

The goal of my drive is to support both the servo and BLDC motors using the same driver. The driver can be either for a BLDC or a servo . The three-phase BLDC motor is 1KW, with a voltage of 48V and a current of 21A.

  • Hey Lokesh,

Our three phase BLDC drivers can drive 6 outputs (3 HS and 3 LS) so you wont be able to dive a BLDC and a servo motor at the same time. One option would be to use a device like DRV8161/8162 (half bridge drivers) and using four of them to drive the motors.

I will pass this post along to Brushed and Stepped motor drivers team to see if they have any drivers with enough channels for your application.

    Akshay

  • Hi Lokesh,

We don't have too many options currently for gate drivers that support 48V. The DRV8770 is our highest rated voltage gate driver that also has two half-bridges (only 2 channels) and independent half bridge mode. You would more than likely still need 2 x DRV8770 to control both load types.
