MCF8316AEVM: Assistance Needed – MCF8316AEVM Not Running BLDC Motor

Dear TI Expert,

I am trying to run the MCF8316AEVM with my BLDC motor but have not been successful. I have set the switches and jumpers according to the guide, but the motor does not run. I also attempted to control it using the GUI application, but without success.

After watching a TI video on the MCF8316A, I noticed that in my setup, the VM voltage remains at zero. However, when measuring VBAT to GND on the MCF8316AEVM, I receive 20V.

It is important to note that I have tested three different working BLDC motors and also switched from VBAT to VM. Additionally, I restored the default values and successfully read all 32 registers.

What could be preventing the motor from running?

  • Hi Shahar,

    Is this new EVM, the device may be MCF8316C.

    You need to use Motor studio to communicate with the board.

    Please download MOTOR STUDIO latest version and then connect.

    Also, device may be in sleep mode, you can try changing Pot position.

    When you power up the board, DC bus current can be up to 30mA then device is active and ready.

  • Hi , thanks for the response.

    After loading the MCF8316EVM preset values and setting the maximum speed to 7.5 (450 RPM), I encountered two faults:

    • CONTROLLER_FAULT
    • MPET_BEMF_FAULT

    Based on forum discussions, I increased the Abnormal BEMF Lock Threshold (% of expected BEMF) [ABNORMAL_BEMF_THR] to 70%. However, after making this adjustment, I received three new errors:

    • CONTROLLER_FAULT
    • ABN_BEMF
    • MTR_LCK

    At this point, after run the motor stopped immediately.

    Following the MCF8316 tuning guide (TI Tuning Guide), I implemented the recommended adjustments:

    1. Enabled MPET Open Loop Parameter Resistance 
    2. Increased the Open Loop Current Reference – Set to 3A (over 3A the motor freeze)
    3. Decreased the Open Loop Slew Rate for MPET – Reduced to 0.1 Hz/s (lowest)
    4. If the fault persists, refer to the Motor Parameters FAQ to obtain the motor's BEMF constant from the datasheet or through manual measurement. Once determined, input the BEMF constant into the Motor BEMF Constant field in the Configured Values section on the MPET page and try different values.

    After applying these changes, the motor ran for approximately 20 seconds before stopping again with the following faults:

    • CONTROLLER_FAULT
    • MPET_BEMF_FAULT
      or
    • CONTROLLER_FAULT
    • ABN_BEMF
    • MTR_LCK

  • After setting the Resistance, Inductance, and BEMF Constant according to the motor's provided specifications, the motor gets stuck spinning in the Run MPET stage.

    JSON file disabled speed loop, it runs only in torque loop. This is initial stage, once torque loop works properly enable speed loop.

    I have programmed, R, L, Max speed and KE is 0 for which we will run MPET.

    Follow bellow step

    1. MPET selection- Just run MPET for KE and do not enable MECH together

    2. After MPET is successful, run the motor in torque loop.

    3. If not able to reach full speed increase ILIMIT in FAULT_CONFIG1 register.

  • After loading your preset values, I attempted to run the MPET (Measure Motor BEMF Constant), but it was unsuccessful. The motor starts running briefly and then stops immediately, displaying the following faults:

    • CONTROLLER_FAULT
    • ABN_BEMF
    • MTR_LCK

    I adjusted the max speed, slew rate, and open-loop speed reference. However, the motor still spins momentarily before stopping, showing the same faults:

    • CONTROLLER_FAULT
    • ABN_BEMF
    • MTR_LCK

    I would be happy for your help in resolving this issue.

    I made few changes to the JSON.

    I just want to recollect I am thinking it is MCF8316C not MCF8316A.

    While running MPET do not select the switch MPET IPD Parameter select and MPET Open loop parameter resistance, I used regular selection.

    Just click run MPET for KE.
