MCF8329A: setting right parameters for my application

Hi,

I would like to ask for help with managing the MCF86329A BLDC driver parameter settings. In my case, I’m driving a Nanotec DB59M024035-A on a custom board (Imax = 8A / 24A peak, Rsense = 0.002Ω). The driver communicates and drives the motor fine, but I would like to set the parameters correctly for my application.

I need to rotate the motor for about 5 seconds in one direction and then the same back, continuously, under load. I'm controlling it using PWM, which increases from about 3% to 10%, then back to 3%, then switches direction and starts a new PWM cycle.

In my tests, the behavior varies—sometimes it works well, but other times the motor just shakes or has no torque. I also tried the same setup on the evaluation board but got similar results. An advice would really help.

  • Hi, thanks for the parameters. I managed to run it fine with the parameters I'm sending now, even under load, but it runs in open loop, so I can't control the speed—am I understanding that right?
    Then I tried adjusting the parameters so it would switch to closed loop, but by the time the driver closes the loop, I already need to reverse the direction—so it's too late to change the speed, as I mentioned in my first question.
    When I tried setting the parameters to get into closed loop sooner, it lost torque.
    Do you think it's possible to make this driver work for my application?

    Thanks for the details. Please let me know if my understanding is correct:

    I need to rotate the motor for about 5 seconds in one direction and then the same back, continuously, under load. I'm controlling it using PWM, which increases from about 3% to 10%, then back to 3%, then switches direction and starts a new PWM cycle.

    Here when you say 3% to 10%, do you mean percentage of MAX_SPEED?

    Also a few suggestions:

    You have set the MAX_SPEED to 3, here you need to enter the maximum rated speed of the motor in Hz.

    You also have set the AUTO_HANDOFF_MIN_BEMF to 2000mV which seems a bit high to me, you could set it much lower so that handoff happens much earlier. Please also refer to our Application Note on Open Loop to Closed Loop Handoff.
