DRV201: Voice Coil Driver

Part Number: DRV201
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8231A, DRV8870, DRV8220, DRV8210

Tool/software:

Hi,

We are novice in voice coil usage. We wish to produce a variable vibration with a fixed vibration frequency of 125Hz and the technical details of the voice coil is attached. Can anyone suggest a suitable driver?

  • Hi Elango,

What would be the operating voltage of the system? The coil specification says 12 V. If you need current regulation then operating supply must be higher than this, like 16 to 18 V. You can consider the DRV8220 in that case. If current regulation will be required you can consider the DRV8231A, DRV8870. Thank you.

  • Hi Murugavel,

Thanks for your swift response. We intended to implement this in a battery operated system where the operating voltage is 5V DC.

Yes the datasheet says 12V but it vibrates at 5V too. I am not sure whether it will work in its full spectrum at 5V. Will check DRV8220 and update.

Is there any voice coil that works on 5Volts? If you have any choice please let us know along with a suitable driver.

    Best Regards, Elango

  • Hi Elango,

Yes it should work with 5V DC as well. You won't need current regulation either, just PWM input should be enough. For 5V the DRV8210 will also be a fit. We're not familiar with voice coil vendors. I'd think lower voltage voice coils are available as well. Thank you.

  • Thank you Murugavel. I shall get back to you if get struck. Will close this feed for the time being.
