MCT8316A: Suitable for low duty cycles (operations between 3-4s) with power available only when motor has to become operational

Part Number: MCT8316A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MCT8329A, MCF8329A-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello, I have a requirement where I need to use this IC (or similar) where a microcontroller is not required and can be used as a standalone motor driver / esc to drive a bldc motor upto 8A. I need it to have sensorless control, fully harware configurable paramters with extremely fast response time.

  • Hi Hitarth,

Thanks for reaching out. Could you specify the end-application you are targeting? You could look at the MCT8329A for a higher current application (8A here).

  • Hi Sachin, thanks for the reply. I am looking to use this as a motor driver for BLDC motors used in automotive actuators. One such example is a medium force actuator whose motor draws upto 8A current. The specified IC can be programmed through passive components, simplifying our processes. I am looking for a solution wherein i can make a PCB with such an IC and only thing that remains on the production line is the solder & no requirement to program a microcontroller.

The IC however will receive power from the vehicle only when the actuator is supposed to be turned on & not otherwise. Hence it needs to have a fast startup and response time to turn on the motor as fast as possible.

  • Hi Hitarth,

Understood, thanks for the details. The MCx family from TI has both Trapezoidal and FOC solutions for driving a BLDC motor. Both in the high and low current ranges. There is no MCU coding needed for these devices. You only need to configure the device parameters, and then it can be stored in the EEPROM in the device to run without any MCU intervention needed. Please do check out out MCF8329A-Q1.

  • Hi Sachin,

Whilst going through the datasheet, I found a MCT8316AT (Hardware variant) which can be configured through hardware and provides high customization using passive components. I wanted to know if I use this variant, will I have to:
    1. Code the EEPROM during assembly
    2. Use the motor as a sensor less feedback & use it efficiently.

    Thanks for the clarity.

  • Hi Hitarth,

Yes, you could use the MCT8316AT to satisfy both your requirements.
