DRV8849: 3-phase stepper motor control using DRV8849

Part Number: DRV8849

Tool/software:

Hi team.

I am investigating whether there are any products capable of driving a 3-phase stepper motor using current control.
According to the following ADI site, it appears that the TMC5062 can be used to control a 3-phase stepper motor with current control.

I believe TI’s DRV8849 has similar functions.
Can TI’s motor drivers perform current control for 3-phase stepper motors?

  • Hi Kimura-san,

The device you highlighted has an internal support for 3-phase motors so it is able to drive those steppers with those specific configurations. The DRV8849 has four full-bridges with internal indexer hard coded for driving two bipolar steppers. Bipolar stepper drivers cannot support control for 3-phase steppers.

That said you can build 3-phase stepper drivers from three half-bridges and creating a drive control logic using an external MCU. Here's an example TI solution, Driving Three-Phase Stepper Motor With BLDC Motor Driver Reference Design. There are several multiple half-bridge drivers (up to 4) in our portfolio with various voltage and current capabilities that may be a fit as well. Thank you.
