DRV120: solution for 1 Amp load

Part Number: DRV120
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8231A, DRV103, DRV110

Tool/software:

Our actual PWM current regulator has been terminated.

I'm looking for selenoid driver with current regulation.

Requirements are:

working voltage range at least 15V to 26V @ selenoid R = 5,5Ohm

active current approx. 1Amp / 200ms (maybe regulation is not necessary)

hold current approx. 250mAmps

Do do have some suitable device?
Thank you!

Roman

  • Hi Roman,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

The current regulation is needed in your application as your current can go to 5A max.  So if you are looking for a diver with integrated current regulation, the DRV8231A can be good option for your application. It benefits from current regulation and also, it has Integrated IPROPI current sensing. It allows you to control solenoid through the MCU.

You can also use the DRVs with current regulation only without current sense as well. Following are some suggestions for devices with current regulation.

They have integrated current regulation so you can set your desired current regulation level for peak and hold capability, and by controlling INput and the current  regulation with your MCU directly you will have very tight timing control.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

  • Hi Mojtaba, I'm not sure if these ICs are the best for me.

I dont have any external driving. I have input just two wires > voltage connected / disconnected

Now I have very very simple fully integrated solution.

Just connect voltage and on the output there is 1A for 200ms than 250mA.

I'm looking for something like DRV103 but with current regulation included. (due to wide voltage range)

    regards

    Roman

  • Hello Roman,

That is right. Those DRVs all need MCUs to be controlled.

The DRV110 can be another option. It can be controlled thorough On / Off input voltage with peak and hold current adjustment.  it drives an External MOSFET With PWM to Control Solenoid Current and also use External Sense Resistor for Regulating Solenoid Current. Ramp Peak Current, Keep Time at Peak Current, Hold Current, and PWM Clock Frequency Can Be Set Externally.

This DRV also has Internal Zener Diode on Supply Pin for High Voltage Operation. Higher voltage above than 15 V can be applied to the DRV110 just through a series resistance, and by setting the external resistor on RPEAK and RHOLD, the current can be regulated.

If you want to have dynamic current regulation, you need to use MCU, otherwise, DRV110 fits with your application.

please let me know if you have any questions.

    Best regards,

    Mojtaba
