MCF8316AEVM: MCF8329EVM Jason files

Tool/software:

I have bought a new MCF8316AEVM. The motor studio detects  that it has a MCF8316C IC. When I try to use the MCF8316C JSON files downloaded from the following texas instrument website. It does not accept these files but it accepts the MCF8316A jason files.

What is the problem?

    Thanks for reaching out. 

    Recommendation from TI is to use our newer parts - the MCF8316C and D over A as the A version has a few erratas which are resolved in the later versions. All EVMs ship out with the MCF8316C now. With respect to the json file, could you check if the downloaded file does not have any special characters in the name?

  • I can now use the files. I tried to do the MPET but it always gives different values. When I use these values nothing works. The runs at a very fast speed in and then stops. I have tried very lvalue of accelaration but nothing works.

    The rotor resitance is 0.2 Ohm, the inductance values is 0.02mH. THe back emf constant is 30mV/Hz, I get different values of Kp and Kp from (0.3, 0.3), (0.6, 0.6) 

    I have a 30V motor when has 4A cmaximum current and a speed of 30000 rpm. 

    I get a bad sine wave in the MPET. It becomes better when I use A1= 0.01Hz/s and A2 = 0. 

    Can you tell me which settings to use in the json file? 

    Is is possible to run MCR8316A with a low inductance motor?

    Could you try running the motor in Current Control loop and let me know how your current waveform looks like? The MCF8316C should support the inductance value of your motor.

  • It is given in the data sheet of the motor and also I measured it with MPET. MPET also give different values in each run.

    Can you enter datasheet value per phase = 0.338/2 = 0.169 ohms in the device and let me know if it performs better?

  • The only things that helps is external inductance > 20uH but it does not work smoothly. 

  • Hi Tahir,

    This motor is high power rated motor, low inductance.

    The phase current will be better at high current/higher speed.

    The resistance and inductance are within the range and we don't need to add external inductor which affects estimation.

    The inductor should also be rated for good saturation rating otherwise external inductor will become less effective,

    The LR constant is 14.5kHz and hence we will use PWM frequency at least 3 times.

    Is this motor on load or no load?

    For power rating above 50W, I recommend to use MCF8329A.

  • The motor will work on load and it will be nominal 30N-m to a maximum of 50 N-m for the motor before the gear. The load is human flesh. The motor will cut the human tissue with blades.

    Is it good to use sensorless control for such a system? 

    I have used your json file on MCF8329A but it does not rotates the motor.The motor has no effect.

    The JSON is for MCF8316C.

    For such load we have to make sure there is no overshoot which can be achievable with proper tuning.

    Are there any certification/compliance needed?
