DRV8706-Q1: Driver IC MOSFET Current monitoring for fault support

Part Number: DRV8706-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello,

I'm a design engineer for Sensata Technologies.

We are using the DRV8706SQRHBRQ1 as part of an Actuator Switch control circuit.

Using SPI communication to the Processor.

We are using the SO ADC pin14 shunt amplifier to report the current measurement conditions flowing through the actuator switch to the processor that will support current measurement reporting through the actuator circuit.

As part of a functional safety, we have been asked that if the SO ADC connection is open circuit can the Driver IC continue to provide overcurrent measurement protection using some of the alternative onboard applications for example:

  • MOSFET VDS Overcurrent protection
  • VGS Gate Driver Fault
  • Offline short circuit and open load detection

From reviewing the datasheet, it seems to me that these above fault checks will provide the necessary checks and measurements to ensure overcurrent/shorts conditions are monitored and reported through the SPI network.

The VDS and CGS will monitor flow through the MOSFETS and report when fault conditions are met, the Offline tests will run diagnostic before the function is activated and report any faults.

Is my assessment correct that these functions can continue to support current measurement through the MOSFETS and report faults even if the ADC SO pin has faulted to open circuit?

Many thanks for you support on this matter.

Neil

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your questions.

Yes, it is correct. VDS, VGS fault detection and offline diag are independent function from CSA/Current sense amp.
