DRV8849: GND & PGND Connection Clarification

Part Number: DRV8849

Tool/software:

In the DRV8849 datasheet, it describes each of the four PGND pins as "Power ground pin for H-Bridge <1-4>. Connect all ground pins together near the IC." However, I don't know if this recommendation is indicating that the ground pins should be shorted together near the IC, or if they should just be connected to split ground planes near the IC. On one hand, in the EVM, GND is connected to the thermal pad, but GND and PGND are connected far away from the IC. On the other hand, in TI's page detailing the best practices for board layout of motor drivers, these grounds are shorted together near the IC:

Can anyone clarify this?
