There is no plan for porting this GUI to a newer version at this time.
What customer needs to take into consideration in case of more modern OS?
Customer can use Windows compatibility mode feature and use this GUI. You can look up in the internet on using Windows compatibility mode to run programs designed for older versions of Windows. Thank you.

seems as though it is possible to run the device in full-step or half-step unipolar mode
and then control the device with two input pins for STEP & DIR.
If this is the case then maybe no need for the GUI ?

Yes, you are correct. There is an MSP430 MCU on the EVM which generates these inputs to the DRV8805 driver based on the GUI settings. See EVM UG - below snippet. The device can be used with external inputs without using the GUI as well. Thank you.
