MCF8329A: MCF8329A vs. MCT8329A

Part Number: MCF8329A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MCT8329A

Tool/software:

Hello Everybody, I search for a driver for my sensorless BLDC motor drive application. I found MCF8329A and MCT8329A drivers. As I understand, the difference between them is MCF8329A using Sensorless FOC and MCT8329A using Sensorless Trapezoidal Control. Which one should I choose? What are the pros and cons of each control type? Thank you.

  • Hi Murat,

Trapezoidal control allows motors to spin at high speeds (Up to 3Khz), very fast startup time (<50ms) and deliver high torque because it applies maximum allowable voltage through the windings.
In terms of disadvantages, Trapezoidal creates a torque ripple due to a non-ideal current drive and this causes audible noise.
FOC has many advantages over Trapezoidal that including the highest power output, lowest noise, minimal torque ripple, maximum motor speed through field weakening, and maximum motor efficiency.
FOC is especially useful in applications with dynamic loads because the FOC control method maximizes torque regardless of motor position.

    Thanks,

    Dhinesh

  • I watched this TI Webinar: https://www.ti.com/video/6216805428001 . As I understand, the construction of the motor is quite important to choose control strategy. If it is a Trapezoidal motor, it is ideally driven with trapezoidal control. My motor is a trapezoidal motor, so should I choose MCT8329A? I am kinda confused.

  • Hi Murat,

Yes, if maximum torque is your application's main criteria, then we recommend using Trapezoidal control product (MCT8329A).

    Thanks,

    Dhinesh
