LMG3100R017: Component Selection and Current Rating Clarification

Part Number: LMG3100R017
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMG3100R044, , TIDA-010276

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am a beginner engineer working on a motor drive design and would appreciate your guidance on component selection and specifications.

My Requirements:

  • Input voltage: 48V DC
  • Continuous operation: 30A RMS
  • Peak operation: ~80Apeak for approximately 3 seconds
  • Application: Motor drive system

Questions:

  1. I am considering between LMG3100R017 (126A rating) and LMG3100R044 (46A rating). Which would be more suitable for my application requirements?
  2. I plan to base my design on the TIDA-010276 reference design. Is this reference design appropriate for my specifications?
  3. Current Rating Clarification: Regarding the LMG3100R017's 126A specification - can you confirm this is the RMS current rating? I want to ensure I understand the datasheet correctly for proper thermal and electrical design considerations.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Best regards,

Han.

  • Hello Han,

Firstly, my apologies for the delayed response. Addressing your queries:

    1. For this application, we recommend the LMG3100R017, as it offers a lower RDS(on) compared to the LMG3100R044.

    2. Yes, you can use the TIDA-010276 reference design for your application.

    3. The 126 A specification for the LMG3100R017 is calculated using the electromigration method and represents the RMS current rating. However, the maximum current through the device is ultimately limited by the thermal considerations of the PCB.
