DRV8962: Batch failures in DRV8962

Part Number: DRV8962

Tool/software:

Hi,

We are using the DRV8962 in several of our designs for driving solenoid valves and resistive heaters. Our schematics are as per the reference design and we are operating off a 28V supply. The loads are very light (Typically < 500ma per output).

What we are finding is that roughly 10% of the DRV8962 chips are faulty on power ON. The fault ranges from short/high current draw to the part oscillating at a high frequency and getting hot. Our boards are being powered ON for testing with no load connected to the DRV8962.

Some of our designs have 14 of these chips on a board and some have just 2 chips per board. The designs with 14 chips have at least 1 faulty DRV8962 per board and the boards with 2 chips have a faulty DRV8962 per 6 boards. These boards were assembled & fabricated by different manufacturers at different times. No other chips on our boards have any problems just the DRV8962 - our boards include much higher density (BGA) and more sensitive chips.

We have invested heavily in this device with over 100 devices used just on our prototype boards. What we want to know is:

1. Is this a known issue with this device. OR

2. Is this a bad batch that we have got?

3. Could we have made a mistake in our design.

It is important to note that the remaining 90% of the DRV8962's continue to work fine day after day. The device is either dead on arrival or it works fine and keeps working.

Happy to share schematics as required.

Thanks,

Rajiv

  • Hi Rajiv,

Thanks for your question. Could you please share the image of the top package markings of the IC as well as the full package label? How many devices you have in stock and who was the seller you bought these ICs from, date of purchase? With this information I can check if there were any known issues related to this specific batch of devices.

Please also share the schematic and PCBA layout to us for analysis. Thank you.

    Regards, Murugavel
