DRV8350: Question Regarding DRV8350RH VDS Pin Configuration

Part Number: DRV8350

Tool/software:

Dear TI Team,

We are currently using the DRV8350RH device and have a question.

As described in the datasheet, we understand that the VDS pin should be configured according to Figure 39 by selecting one of the seven available levels. However, in our design, we left this pin open. The reason is that the motor we are using draws very large current, with peaks reaching up to around 90A.

Even when we set the VDS pin to the maximum 1V level, we sometimes experienced malfunction issues when very large currents were flowing through the motor. Because of this, we decided to leave the pin open.

Upon reviewing this again, it seems that we should have disabled the VDS pin instead, and we may have made a mistake. Could you please let us know what potential problems could occur if the VDS pin is left open?

Thank you for your support.

Best regards

  • Hey Johnson,

If the VDS LVL pi is left in HiZ then it will assume you intended to put the device in a VDS OCP level of 0.4V as shown in the electrical characteristics table:

You would need to tie the pin to DVDD to disable the VDS OCP if that is what you intended to do.

    Best,

    Akshay
