MCF8316C-Q1: MPET_IPD_FAULT during Smart Tune

Tool/software:

I have the MCF8316 motor driver and I am trying to have it rune MPET or use smart tune to start it working using the motor studio GUI, I loaded the registers with the file given in this other thread MCF8316D: Programming MCF8316D for the First Time - Motor drivers forum - Motor drivers - TI E2E support forums

When I try the MPET it logs that it is trying R and L measurements but it does nothing beyond this point. 

When I try running smart tune with my motor parameters it will sometimes spin the motor a few degrees before throwing two faults, MPET_IPD_FAULT and CONTROLLER_FAULT. 

The powersupply is set to about 20V which is below the motor max and it has a high enough current limit that I am not hitting the supply limit. 

I am at this point unsure what causes these faults or how to update the registers to fix them? 

As a secondary questions since I am new with motor drivers like this one, when I go to program the registers I know the values can be found in the datasheet for each address but is there any guide for how find what should be written to each register based on my design? 

Edit: after trying multiple register config files from another thread it seems to be primary an issue with the configuration so this is now more a question on how I generate the right values for the registers.

    SmartTune is available for MCF8316C in this release.

    MPET_IPD_FAULT can occur for one of the following reasons

    1. DRVOFF pin is LOW 

    2. IPD current configuration is too high for the motor resistance, means if resistance is too high IPD current -> Reduce IPD current

    You can use SmartTune to get speed loop Kp, Ki., do you have MCF8316C EVM?

    When you use SmartTune, provide max current rating appropriately, you can keep lesser value (not too low) and also max speed.

  • The DRVOFF pin is pulled high.

    I will try reducing the IPD current and rerunning Smart Tune and MPET

    I have the MCF8316A EVM which I used to convert the UBS to SDA SCL which I then wired to my custom MCF8316C driver board

    The motor I am driving is 30V rated, 8A max, 10 pole pair up to 10krpm but it is low resistance and low inductance due to a limited winding count. 

    As a starting point what should I load as my initial register configuration or should I just start with the smarttune and see if that can generate the right register configuration?

    Since motor is capable of 8A, reducing current will not help.

    Can you share custom board schematic (MCF8316 section).

  • The 0 ohm resistors are there for debugging flexibility and I have a pull up on both data lines (one being not shown)

    Can we verify with following changes to schematic

    1. Remove pull down resistor on DRVOFF and directly short

    2. Remove LED from Phase A, B, C section so that there should not be any capacitive effect on the IPD pulses.

  • I have the LEDs off I removed them prior to most of my testing, the drive off 10k pull down has been shorted to directly connect that pin to ground

  • This is the initial config. file I load to it. When I tested with some other files I found that were pre-generated one of them was able to make it spin (not consistently but it would hit an error and reset and then spin more)

  • That file was able to get the motor running and I can somewhat adjust the speed using the I2C controller, it does seem to stall out at higher speed setting % but at low % it will run consistently. 

    When I am in the (advanced tuning) and go to make a change to the register value do I need to click the "write to eprom" to update the register on the device itself? 

  • Hi Paul,

    The JSON I shared is torque mode, speed is not regulated.

    If motor is on no load, speed can increase and if it crossed 170% of MAX SPEED, abnormal speed detection will trigger.

    You can reduce ILIMIT in the FAULT_CONFIG register or in the GUI Advanced tuning page -> closed loop settings.

    We do not need to write to EEPROM, any change in the GUI will work but after power cycle changes will be lost.

    To write to EEPROM issue zero speed, ensure MOTOR Status as MOTOR_IDLE and then write.

    Give importance to all the instructions provided in the EEPROM write procedure explained in this document  MCF83xx and MCT83xx EEPROM Read and Write Procedure

    In the GUI below shown image, follow steps as marked

  • For the torque mode how can I find the torque it is set to? I am assuming the I2C % interface is telling it what percentage of the maximum torque to set to?

    When I follow the steps and write to EEPROM this will allow me to preserve the register values after cycling power so in theory I could disconnect the I2C interface and just use a pwm to control the motor speed from say a FPGA or other device?

    Torque is coil current, if the ILIMIT is 8A which generates max torque for the motor.

    Yes, you can program to EEPROM and disconnect the GUI, control the speed through speed pin.
