MCF8316C-Q1: Setting Motor Parameters in Motor Studio

Part Number: MCF8316C-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MCF8316A, MOTORSTUDIO

Tool/software:

I have been following the guide for tuning the MCF8316A (assuming it applies to the C variant motor driver), the motor I am working with uses a custom stator design and 10 pole pairs. Part of the problem I have had is in the Control Configuration-Motor Parameters section of the Motor Studio GUI the values I have measured for Motor Phase inductance and Motor BEMF constant fall under the minimum that can be entered.

For the motor phase DC resistance I measured 1.7Ohms which worked fine

Inductance measured as 11uH per phase

and the BEMF came out to be 1.838 mV/rpm this was calculated using BEMF_Constant_KE = (Eph*Te) / sqrt(3) where my Eph is 122mV and Te is 26.1ms

But the lower limit in the GUI is 0.02 for inductance and 0.6 for BEMF constant.

Are the units for these different from what I calculated or how should I approach working with values in this range?

I have noticed my motor at no load has a jerky startup and can only go to a low speed which I am assuming is corelated to these being wrong.

  • Hi

The units in the MOTORSTUDIO as follows

    1. R is in ohm, you can enter 1.7

    2. L in mH, you can enter 0.011

    3. KE in mV/Hz, you can enter 1.8

Have you verified SmartTune? Please use SmartTune for MCF8316C, all parameters and speed loop will be calculated by the SmartTune automatically.

You need to install MOTORSTUDIO ver 0.1.30 for SmartTune feature.

    Thanks and Best regards
