DRV8870: DRV8870

Part Number: DRV8870

Tool/software:

Hello,

We using DRV8870 driver web tensioning application.

In this application we we driving motor in reverse direction and externally it is physically rotating in Forward direction.

All we need to keep stable current in motor, based on Vref.

But when start pulling motor opposite direction current doesn't stay same and  increase  by ~ 50mA i don't see any tripping happening.

Is DRV8870 is cable to handle motor operation in Forth Quadrant ?

Thanks

  • Hi Subodh,

Thanks for contacting us via this forum. See below snippet from the datasheet. The current regulation Itrip in the DRV8870 driver is done by implementing slow decay during tOFF. In the presence of additional BEMF as in your use case this slow decay time may not be sufficient to decrease the current to below Itrip level during tOFF time.

Is DRV8870 is cable to handle motor operation in Forth Quadrant ?

For H-bridges to regulate current in 2nd and 4th quadrant fast decay during tOFF may be required. The DRV8870 has only slow decay available for current regulation. Thank you.

  • Hello  ,

Thanks for this information. Now it make sense.

Is there ant TI part which has fast decay option ?

    Thanks
