DRV8410: DRV8410 - controlling small BDC motor precisely

Part Number: DRV8410
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8214

Tool/software:

Dear Mr.Schellhase,
I intend to control a valve + gear + BDC - assembly with the DRV 8410.
I want to be able to open the valve 10%, 20%, 30%, ..up to 100%
and I want to be able to close it again to the percentage of my choice.

How can this be accomplished precisely and with a minimum of motor movement ?
Thank you for any hints regarding this subject.

Martin

  • Hi Martin,

The DRV8410 has current regulation to limit the start-up and stall current of the motor but not control position. Typically for precise control, our motor drivers are used with hall sensors for position detection.

The DRV8214 and DRV8234 have integrated ripple counting that can detect position without a hall sensor. If the features and I2C control work for this application then they could be worth investigating.

  • Thank you for pointing me at the right device, David. I will have to use the DRV8214 as the circuit will run off 1.8 .. 2.5 V
Is there documentation on how the ripple counter is implemented and configured ?
Do you see the DRV8214 discontinued in the near future ?

    Best  regards,
    Martin

  • Hi Martin,

    Glad to help!

Yes, we have plenty of documentation on ripple counting. I would suggest starting with the DRV8214EVM. The EVM product page has videos that walk through GUI operation and setup. The EVM users guide and device datasheet will help with new design development. Also see the following app note that goes into detail about position control with ripple counting.
