MCF8329EVM: How to run MCF8329EVM without I2C

Part Number: MCF8329EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MCF8329A, MOTORSTUDIO, MCF8329A-Q1

Hi,

we are evaluating the MCF8329 driver chip to run a pump motor.  We have purchased an evaluation board, and if we undertand the user guide correctly we should be able to connect up witht he jumper in the POT position and the motor should run when we turn the pot.  However, it does not.

Are there are restrictions on the motor specification that can be connected to run in this way?

If we use the Motor Studio tool with the jumper in I2C position, we can get the motor to run with Smart tune.  But it stops part way through and shows various faults including; Controller_fault, Abn_BEMF, Mtr_Lck.  Note the motor is being run with no load on it.  Note also that the initial set up steps in the motor studio tool refer to a jumper J12 which we do not have on our eval board.

Ultimately, we do not require complex control for the motor.  We don't even really need speed control.  We want the pump to turn on and run at whatever speed it needs to.  So we are hoping to be able to limit the connections from the main MCU to the driver chip, hopefully to just an analog output fromt he MCU representing the target motor speed.  But we can't see how you would be able to do this without also having an i2C connection to be able to set up the Eeprom initially.

  • Hi Shafiq,

We need to have right tuning parameter to spin the specific motor using MCF8329A. Could you please try running the SmartTune tool once again using "Load" option selected?

Please make sure you have entered the right motor parameters (Rated voltage, maximum motor phase current at rated speed and rated speed) before starting the SmartTune tool.

Yes, you are right. J12 is not present in the MCF8329A-Q1 EVM. EVM picture provided in the  MotorStudio is MCF8329A (Industrial version) EVM.

Also, please note that the POT need to be rotated counterclockwise to spin the motor. There is mistake in the EVM user's guide.

I2C only required for motor tuning. After tuning, motor can be operated with an analog input to MCF8329A.

    Thanks,

    Dhinesh
