DRV10970EVM: Sensorless setup

Part Number: DRV10970EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV10970

Hello,

I am trying to connect a BF3211NB2B BLDC motor (manufactured by Constar) to the DRV10970EVM evaluation board. This motor has four connections: U, V, W, and COM (center tap/neutral point).

I have connected the following:

  • P1 — 12V DC power supply
  • P2 — Motor phases U, V, and W
  • COM — Currently not connected

I am using the onboard potentiometer to control the motor speed. However, the motor only runs intermittently — most of the time it just produces noise and fails to start properly.

I suspect the issue is related to the COM (neutral/center tap) wire not being connected, but I cannot find any information in the DRV10970EVM User's Guide (SLAU673) on how to connect this type of motor.

Could you please advise on:

  • Where should the COM wire be connected on the DRV10970EVM board?
  • Are there any jumper settings that need to be configured for this motor type?
  • Is there an application note or example for connecting a 4-wire BLDC motor to this eval board?

Thank you for your assistance.
