MCF8316D: MCF8316D Tuning Support

Part Number: MCF8316D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MOTORSTUDIO, MCF8329HS

Hi,

I'm trying to tune a MCF8316D driver with a LS-7060 DC Centrifugal Brushless Air Blower motor. The datasheet is attached.

LS7060.pdf

I'm using motor studio with the MCF8316D dev kit. The dev kit is powered by an external supply running 24V with 5A current limit. The dev kit hardware setup as described in the motor studio hardware setup.

I've tried to use the smart tune, but it can't ever generate the configuration successfully. Here's the parameters I've been using:

Load: Load or No Load

Rated Voltage: 24V

Rated Current: 2-8A

Rated Speed: 1345Hz

Control Mode: Speed mode

The Optional parameters I've tried including them or not, neither successfully generates the config.

Phase Resistance: 0.165 Ohm

Phase Inductance: 0.074 mH

BEMF Constant: Always empty

If I have the current high, the motor doesnt turn on. If i set the current lower (3-4 A) then the motor does turn on during the tune sequence, but cant get past about 60% speed, so the configuration generation fails. The most common error codes I get are HW_LOCK_LIMIT or BEMF_FAULT.

I've also tried the MPET which also always fails.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you need any other information. The motor can spin and can be tuned with lower current and speed but with the datasheet values it doesnt work successfully. Thanks.

  • Manually configuring the registers I have got it to reliably start, but I get HW_LOCK_LIMIT when I try to go above 75% speed. The startup and ramp and open loop all seem fine, they work reliably. The closed loop max speed seems to be triggering a limit somewhere, but I'm not sure which limit. Changing the current limits doesnt change the behavior.

Increasing the PWM Frequency to 60kHz does let me run the motor up to 80% speed, but the speed is not stable at 80%. Going above 80% speed triggers faults such as DRIVER_FAULT, OCP, OCP_HC, CONTROLLER_FAULT, SPEED_LOOP_SATURATION

  • Hi Adam,

I will go through the thread and provide my response by today.

    Thanks and Best regards

  • Thanks, bit of an update, I went through all the registers manually and got the startup and speed control to work correctly. The only problem is that the MPET cannot properly run, it seems the signal is not stable during the process so it never completes successfully. It can successfully read the resistance and inductance, but not the BEMF. I've manually tuned the BEMF and all the registers so the motor can work, but it would be nice if the MPET could work as well.

  • Hi Adam,

Have you checked this FAQ link: [FAQ] MOTORSTUDIO: SmartTune FAQ?

I'd also like to suggest the MCF8329HS as an alternative for high-power blower motor applications.

Let's proceed with MCF8316D using SmartTune, though currents above 6A peak may trigger thermal shutdown.

You mentioned successful SmartTune completion with lower current settings - correct? If so, please:

    1. Use that JSON configuration
    2. Increase ILIMIT, HW_LOCK_LIMIT, SW_LOCK_LIMIT
    3. Adjust deglitch time accordingly (2uS)

Could you share the low-current JSON file?

For the next SmartTune run, try these parameters: • Max current: 4A • Max speed: 700Hz (50% of rated) • Target: mechanical performance tuning

    Thanks and Best regards
