MCT8315EVM: Controlling Torque/Current

Hello E2E Experts,

I am trying to take a torque as an input to my system, and have the motor output that torque. I am having trouble figuring out how to output a specific torque on the MCT8315EVM. Are there registers in the RAM that I can set, or should I make a current controller using a feedback loop and the SOX pin as input? Are there any better ways to do this? For reference, I am using the MSPM0G3507 LaunchPad to send speed commands to the MCT8315EVM using PWM.

    The MCT8315 operates on duty cycle control, regulating current to the configured CBC threshold. For torque control applications, motor current must be measured and duty cycle adjusted accordingly.

    Loop bandwidth limitations may occur since torque regulation relies on external processing - sampling motor current/speed and adjusting power output via external controller can introduce ripple due to bandwidth constraints.

    For true closed-loop torque control, I recommend the MCF8316C or MCF8316D instead

    In this situation, I am looking to do this torque control while also needing the option to switch and do speed/position control using an encoder. Because of the speed/position functionality, I chose to use the MCT8315. However, it sounds like an FOC would work better for the torque control.

    Could I accomplish both of these modes with one of the boards you recommended? I want to be able to change between them dynamically if possible (e.g. during runtime). If one of these boards cannot do that, do you have another suggestion?

    Speed and torque control are supported, but position control is not available on MCF/MCT devices.

    The MCF8316D/C includes SmartTune functionality in MOTORSTUDIO, making tuning simple without requiring detailed register knowledge or motor control expertise.

    Could you clarify the position control requirements for your application?
