TMS320C203: Hybrid Outboard Motor Controller (Marine Application)

I’m reaching out to see if you could provide some technical/design support for a hybrid motor controller we’re developing for an outboard application. We’re in the early stages and looking for general guidance as we define the system.

As a starting point, the system will be based on an 80 V battery with an initial current target of ~50 A.

In particular, we’d appreciate any input on:

  • Power stage / inverter selection
  • Control approach for hybrid operation
  • Device recommendations (SiC, GaN, etc.)
  • Thermal and marine environment considerations

If you have any relevant reference designs or application notes, that would be very helpful as well.

    Thanks for reaching out. Sorry for the delay!

    80V battery is a little bit difficult for us to recommend devices for. We have some 100V abs max parts, but typically in motor systems we like to have this spec at ~2x the battery voltage, due to voltage spikes that are typically seen in motor systems.

    You can look into DRV8353, or DRV8300 in this case and see if the specs look reasonable for your system design.

    On our roadmap, we are also planning some GaN parts that target the 80V battery voltage, but these are not available yet.
