DRV8962: DRV8962DDVR Output power

Part Number: DRV8962
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8462, DRV8462EVM

Hi All,

What is the usable power output of the DRV8962DDVR or DRV8962VEVM?

For example, is it possible to operate it at 65V and 10A?
What is the actual power limit for operation?

I understand it depends on the heat dissipation measures, but it would be helpful if you could tell me, for example, how much power output is possible with certain heat dissipation measures.

Ishiwata

  • Hi Ishiwata-san,

What is the actual power limit for operation?

This depends on several factors: The ambient temperature Ta, forced cooling of the heatsink with a fan or still air cooling of the heatsink, conduction losses, switching losses, continuous quiescent current of the driver. You can plug-in these values in the formulae given in the datasheet section 8.1.1.2 Thermal Calculations and see if the estimated die temperature would exceed TSD (thermal shutdown) limit for the device. The device does not have a specific power limit per se.

That said, a very similar driver in DDV package the DRV8462 was tested with 48 V, 10 A full-scale current setting. See below thermal image. This was with Ta = 25 °C, still air, EVM heatsink. Note, this was the heatsink temperature not the die temperature. This amounts to about 480 W of drive. We tried with 52 V, the device hit TSD. With fan cooling it could support for longer durations without TSD. I hope this gives you an idea of usable load power driving capability for a specific heatsink and associated thermal conditions. Thank you.

  • Hi Murugavel-san,

Thank you very much for your support and response.

This feedback is very helpful. I will share these results with my customers.

Are there equivalent evaluation results for the DDW package?

    Sure, thank you.

See below images with 24 V and 5 A current setting with DRV8462EVM using the DDW package. The DDW EVM supports 24 V 5 A with no TSD but cannot sustain 48 V 5 A continuously without encountering TSD.
