MCF8316DEVM: How to start motor rotation after SmartTune configuration in MCF8316DEVM using Motor Studio GUI

Part Number: MCF8316DEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MOTORSTUDIO, MCF8316D

Hi team,

Purpose:
I would like to rotate a BLDC motor using MCF8316DEVM and the TI GUI tool Motor Studio.
Background / Setup:
  • Device: MCF8316DEVM
  • GUI tool: Motor Studio
  • I successfully completed the SmartTune configuration.
Issue:
After completing SmartTune configuration, I am not sure how to proceed to actually rotate the motor.
Observation:
  • The configuration process finishes successfully without errors.
  • However, I cannot find the correct procedure or GUI operation to start motor rotation.
Questions:
  • Could you please explain the step-by-step procedure (based on the GUI screen) to start rotating the motor after SmartTune configuration?
  • Which settings or buttons in Motor Studio should be used to enable motor drive and start rotation?
Best Regards,
Shota
  • Hi,

Have you seen motor studio user guide?

You need to enable I2C override switch and enter speed command.

    Thanks and best regards,

  • Hi Venkatadri-san,
    Thank you for reply.
    Purpose:
I would like to optimize the control parameters so that the motor can rotate smoothly over a wide speed range from 100 rpm to 3000 rpm.
    Background / Setup:
    • Target speed range: 100 rpm to 3000 rpm
    • I am particularly focused on achieving stable speed control in the low-speed region around 100 rpm.
    Issue:
    • At low speeds (around 100 rpm), maintaining stable speed control is challenging.
    • I would like to improve the smoothness and stability in this region.
    What I am looking for:
    • Guidelines, application notes, or reference materials describing parameter tuning procedures
    • Recommended methods or best practices for optimizing control parameters, especially for low-speed operation
    Questions:
    1. Are there any recommended procedures for tuning parameters to achieve stable operation across a wide speed range?
    2. Are there specific considerations or techniques to improve stability in the low-speed region (around 100 rpm)?
    3. Is there any reference design or example showing similar optimization?
    Best Regards,
    Shota
  • Hi Hori Shota,

    Thanks for providing details.

I recommend evaluating the autotune feature. TI provides an automatic tuning procedure through MotorStudio SmartTune. Introducing SmartTune: Automatically Tune your Motor Parameters | Video | TI.com

This autotune algorithm runs a small-signal characterization on the load and develops appropriate gains for the speed loop. The generated values should work across a wide range rated for the motor.
Also, current loop gains are automatically calculated in the device. Sometimes we can modify the gain to meet acoustic requirements or reduce ripple response at lower current levels, where the resolution can introduce such behavior.
The MotorStudio GUI also provides a closed-loop analysis tab where we can verify the system response for the programmed KP, KI gains, acceleration/deceleration, and current levels.
Please note that BEMF accuracy dictates overall performance. At lower speeds, the BEMF generated may be lower due to motor construction. In such cases, evaluate whether 100 RPM is above 15% of the rated speed. Generally, motor speeds above 18% of rated speed are good for closed-loop control, and due to the MCF8316D's good signal chain, operation at lower speed ranges is also possible.

    Thanks and best regards,
