DRV8824 Current Regulation Setting

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8824

I am using a DRV8824 to drive an Oriental Motor PK243-03 Stepper motor.  The driver chip as current regulation to provide smooth motion.  What is the typical rule of thumb on determining on how to calculate and set this current setpoint?

  • Hi Todd,

I searched the motor information which I found here: http://www.oriental-motor.co.uk/Products/Stepper_motors/Stepper_motors/2phase_motors_pk/?&filter1=Standard&filter2=42+mm&arid=4382&dwn=artnr

According to the torque/speed curve, the motor current should be set to 220 mA. What this means is that your RMS current should be set to this value.

To set the motor current you will need to select the RSENSE and a VREF and then compute ITRIP to be VREF / 5*RSENSE. This equation will give you the sine wave peak current, but 0.22 is the RMS value. Hence, the actual ITRIP that you want to set your motor to is 0.22A/0.707 which is 311 mA.

Once you set your ITRIP to this value, it does not matter if you are using microstepping or full stepping. The resulting current will be 220 mA.

Hope the info helps. Best regards,

    Jose Quinones
