DRV8825 Question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8825

Hi there,

I have a customer who is using DRV8825 for a dot matrix printer. they have the following question.

From datasheet,
Operating Voltage        : 8.2 ~ 45 V
Output current                : 2.5 A (limited by power dissipation and junction temp)

However, datasheet also mentioned 2.5-A Maximum Drive Current at 24V, 25°C.

May I know is the 2.5A output only applicable to 24V drive condition ?
What would the maximum current output if driving at 40V ?

Can you please advise also what is max current output at 40V, 40°C condition ?

Please help to advise, as it is not stated in the datasheet,

Thank you in advance

Adam

  • Hi Adam,

The 2.5A current is not tied to input voltage. The device can work at that current if VM is anywhere in between 8.2V and 45V as long as the power supply can provide the current and the device can remain cool enough. That being said, how much current the PS can supply is a matter of which PS is chosen, whereas how cool the device remains is a matter of the ambient temperature and the board's thermal impedance.

The higher the ambient temperature, the harder it is to reach and sustain the 2.5A current for prolonged periods of time. 40C, however, is not hard at all. Even at 50C you should be able to reach the 2.5A if the board is designed properly. For suggestions on how to design the board properly refer to SLMA002 or look at the Gerber files for our EVM.

Hope the info helps. Best regards,
