DRV8825 PowerPAD connection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8825

Hello,
I'm designing a stepper motor driver with the DRV8825 and because of technical specifications of my project, the powerPAD dissipation copper pour CAN'T be connected to ground. Can I leave it floating or PowerPAD MUST be connected to ground?
Second question is about nHOME and nFAULT open-drain outputs. As the driver will be an universal daughter-board for different controllers, there's the possibility for those pins to be either used as outputs or be connected to ground. Will shorting to ground these pins affect the operation of the device?

Thank you!
Regards.

  • Hi Vasil,

It is always preferable to connect the Power Pad to GND, but if this is not an option, then it would be fine to leave it floating electrically. Do recall the Power Pad is still a means to improve thermal impedance and remove heat from the die, so this still needs to be connected to a decent sized copper structure that operates as a thermal heat sink.

It should be fine to connect the open drain outputs to GND.

    Best regards,

    Jose Quinones
