Need clarification on DRV2605 please!

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV2605, DRV2605EVM-CT

I have the EVM with me and would like to implement the DRV2605 into the design.

I was told by our CEO that the haptic is an external piece of software which is a protected IP that can only be used if we buy the TI chip.

Can you please clarify?

Thanks so much.

  • The DRV2605 IC has the Haptic control firmware built-in to the device, so the uC or Processor in the system does not have to generate PWM to activate the Haptic (vibrating) device.  There are "canned" routines included, you can use any from the library without license or royalty fees, and yes, they are written specifically for the DRV2605.

Is this customer wanting to take our firmware and use it with a different device?  If they are going to use the DRV2605, not sure why the firmware IP would be an issue.  If they are looking at using a different device, what would be the main reasons for doing so, especially when everything to use the DRV2605 is included and available?

  • One addition,

For devices without embedded waveforms you may have to license patents or software from a Haptics software company called Immersion.  The advantage of the DRV2605 is that the waveforms are included and do not have to be licensed.  The price of the license is included in the price of the DRV2605.

    Thanks,

  • HI Leonard and Brian,

I just finally connected real time with the customer and he said that his evm did not come with any software or instructions, etc, on how to program the device or even control it via the PC.  Can you point us to the "canned routines" so he can get started? He said he didn't have time to go searching around on TI's website.

Sounds like we mostly just need a quick start guide and a few examples.
    THanks for your help here!

  • Amy,

The DRV2605EVM-CT is actually operated through the Capactive Touch buttons on the board.  See the User's Guide on the following page.
    http://www.ti.com/tool/drv2605evm-ct

The firmware can be downloaded for a better understanding of what is happening inside the device.

    Thanks,
    Brian

  • Brian,

I don't see a link to download the firmware for the MSP430?

    Thanks
