Yes AVREF and BVREF can be driven by external DAC to control motor winding current in holding mode. Note that DRV8834 current regulation works with fixed PWM frequency and Vref voltages set only the peak level of chopping current so the average current in holding mode will depend upon supplied voltage, motor winding resistance and inductance values.
