GUI Composer for DK-LM4F-DRV8312 will not open properly

So I reprogrammed the controlcard with blinky.bin to make sure I had communication. It was successful, so now what do I do to reprogram the ControlCard so instaSPin will work?

The GUI Composer  GUI .exe programs the card when it launches.

Did you run the full GUI Composer installation that comes with the kit?  This is needed before the GUI will open properly.

If so, do you have any OTHER GUI Composer run-times installed?  This kit was created with the first version of GUI Composer, and if you have since installed a newer version in the same directory this GUI won't launch. You would need to re-run the GUI Composer installation that came with the kit.

I have installed and reinstalled the GUI Composer that came on the disk several times. I have tried reinstalling it, uninstalling it then installing it again. Still opens up blank each try. No other GUI run-times installed as far as I can tell.

I'm going to send this to the GUI composer team to see if they have any ideas.

I suspect the problem has to do with proxy settings, but at this point I am not sure.

Do you know if port 7272 is blocked on your PC?

Would you be able to download and install the newest version of GUI Composer Runtime (CCS 5.4) from: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Category:GUI_Composer and see if you are still having issues?

The installed executable should be named GUI_Composer-1.8.0.0-Setup.exe

After installing it in a new folder try running YOUR_INTALL\guicomposer\webapps\modem_m3\modem_m3_gc_app.exe

Let me know if you can see a dial and two graphs on the main window?

I installed that and when I open modem_m3_gc_app.exe I just get a window with an orange loading bar across the center. After 15 minutes it still says loading. I am not sure if port 7272 is blocked or not.

While modem_m3_gc_app.exe is running can you try typing in another console window: telenet localhost 7272

Do you get any message? 

I added more tracing in some of the JAR files.

Can you try replacing these two attached files in the folder: YOUR_INTALL\guicomposer\eclipse\plugins

After that:

From YOUR_INTALL\guicomposer\eclipse run “GUIComposer.exe -clean”

From YOUR_INTALL\guicomposer\eclipse run “GUIComposer -debug -vmargs -Dgc.webApp=modem_m3”

Capture the output in the newly created console window and assign it this entry.

Please rename the two attached files: remove the four digits at the front of these files ( these digits were added somehow when I attached them). 

Files with the same names should be already in YOUR_INTALL\guicomposer\eclipse\plugin folder.

I entered "telenet localhost 7272" into the console and it said telenet is not recognized as a command or batch file. I then replaced the files after renaming them as you said and ran the two commands.

First one opened TI Resource Explorer window, not sure what to do here. Second one opened a console window with a bunch of words. Not sure what you mean by "Capture the output in the newly created console window and assign it this entry."

Same response. Not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Let’s try another command:

Before you run GUIComposer.exe open a DOS console and type: netstat -a -o | find "7272"

See if there is already a socket listener on your PC for port 7272.

If there is a program listening, you will get some lines printed after you execute the command.

Once you run GUIComposer.exe, while it is running, try again the same command.

GUIComposer.exe should listen on that port. 

I installed telnet successfully. Seems the port is not opened. Here is what my console looks like.

The output you showed is without GUIComposer.exe running, right?

That shows there is no other program listening on port 7272. 

What is the output of the same command while you have GUIComposer.exe running? 

Same output. Just to be clear, when I open GUIComposer.exe from ti>guicomposer>eclipse, I get a window that opens up and says TI Resource Explorer. Is that correct?

For this experiment:

To start GUIComposer.exe can you, please, open a DOS console: 

'cd' to YOUR_INTALL\guicomposer\eclipse

then run in the same console: GUIComposer.exe -debug -vmargs -Dgc.webApp=modem_m3”

While GUICompser.exe is running open another DOS console and run: netstat -a -o | find "7272"

Let me know the output of netstat as well as the new DOS console that has the GUIComposer.exe tracing. 

Also make sure you are running the new version of GUIComposer.exe (the one I asked to download).

Do you have setup proxy settings on your PC? 

If so can you disable them for few minutes and see if GUIComposer.exe can run? 

Also, are you running local firewall? If so may be there is a setting that prevents "localhost:7272" from establishing connection. 

Or it may be a some kind of third party software or antivirus program that does it. 

Is it possible to try WebEx to see if I can help with that?

No proxy. Disabled antivirus and firewall, same results. I have been doing this all with the eval board connected through USB and with power on if that matters.

Here are few other things to try.

Make sure you are running the latest GUIComposer.exe I asked you to download and install.

While you are running "GUIComposer.exe -debug -vmargs -Dgc.webApp=modem_m3"

Can you open a web browser and type in the address bar: http://locahost:7272

Can you also try again form a DOS prompt: telnet localhost 7272

while "GUIComposer.exe -debug -vmargs -Dgc.webApp=modem_m3" is running.

I want to double check if you can establish an external socket connection while you are running "GUIComposer.exe -debug -vmargs -Dgc.webApp=modem_m3".

Is it possible to run WebEx session if this can't help?

So I had GUIComposer already installed. And without uninstalling it, I just installed the .exe file you told me to download. Is that sufficient? When I type that into my browser I get the generic "Problem Loading Page" Connection has timed out page. And when I type that command into DOS I just get a blank screen. Even the command disappears.

Since you had already GUIComposer installed when you installed the one I asked to, did you install it in another folder so the two installs don't interfere? 

If not, can you install it in its own folder? 

Running telnet localhost 7272 is OK to come out bank. 

Once the screen is blank after you run "telnet localhost 7272" while GUICOmposer is running can you try typing "ggg" and then press "enter" key.  See if any messages come out.

Do you have some message when you press Enter? 

I reinstalled it to its own folder, then followed what you said. Same results. And when I type ggg into the console it just leaves 3 blank spaces, and when i hit enter it just shows a new blank space. Nothing else like you described.

Can you try from a DOS prompt: ping localhost

ping works as expected.

When you have running: GUIComposer -debug -vmargs -Dgc.webApp=modem_m3

can you show me your browser message for the URL: http://127.0.0.1:7272

Just says connecting and never loads. Just a blank page.

Can we see if some bytes are transferred between the browser and the web server.  

Run "GUIComposer.exe -debug -vmargs -Dgc.webApp=modem_m3"

Open Windows Task Manager and in the Performance tab there is: "Resource Monitor" button at the bottom. 

Click it and it will open the Resource Monitor. Go to the Network tab.

There are four sections. Sort each section by "Image" and see which ones have GUIComposer.exe in them.

Especially "Network Activity"  - see if any bytes are sent or received by GUIComposer.exe

You can attach the screen snapshot. 

I attached traceAll.properties. 

Can you copy it to the "eclipse" folder of the install and form a DOS prompt, while in the Eclipse folder try the command: 

GUIComposer.exe -debug traceAll.properties -vmargs -Dgc.webApp=modem_m3 -Dlog.LEVEL=ALL

More sever logging should be in the DOS console, can you capture it and attach it. 

There were none by GUI composer in network activity. Here is a shot of every where it did appear.

Here is the additional DOS console with the new file added.

In your last log snapshot I see that GUIComposer.exe could not bind socket on port 4242. 

I wander if there is another process already listening on port 4242. 

Before running GUIComposer.exe using the Resource Monitor can you see if there is another process listening on port 4242 - the last section "Listening Port"? 

By any chance do you have a process running on your PC called: DsNcService.exe -  Juniper Networks software?

I checked my processes, none under that name. No processes listening on port 4242. Here is a snapshot.

Can you unzip the attached file jetty_test_one.zip to YOUR_INTALL/eclipse folder.

It will create a folder “jetty_test_one” inside the eclipse folder.

From a DOS console go into that folder and type:

 ..\jre\bin\java.exe -classpath .;servlet-api-3.0.jar;jetty-server-8.1.10.v20130312.jar;jetty-util-8.1.10.v20130312.jar;jetty-http-8.1.10.v20130312.jar;jetty-io-8.1.10.v20130312.jar;jetty-continuation-8.1.10.v20130312.jar HelloWorld 7272

Then open a browser and type: “localhost:7272”

Do you see “Hello World” in your browser?

To stop the web server close the DOS console.

No, when I type that it puts information on the DOS console, shown below. I tried it twice, so it is repeated twice in the image, I cut off the second time partially in the image.

I think the reason you have this exception is that you have .jar.jar repeated in your command - toward the end, just before HelloWorld. 

Can you try again after removing the duplicate .jar? 

Same result.

HelloWorld now has an additional w. 

Wow these are tough to find. Same result, page cannot be displayed on browser.

I created and attached a BAT file - startws.bat

Can you copy it to the jetty_test_one folder and start it from there.

Great - so the port is not blocked. 

There must be something GUIComposer specific. 

How powerful is this PC? What model? 

How many CPUs does it have? Memory?

I understand it run Windows 7. Is it 64 or 32 bit OS?

Very new PC. Windows 7, 64 bit, 8GB RAM, 12 CPUs, Intel Xeon CPU E5-2620@2GHz

I wonder if such powerful machine ( 12 CPUs) may expose some multithreaded bug.

Interestingly enough, the only other machine that we’ve seen similar issues with GUIComposer have very close characteristics – 12 cores.

Do you have Java JDK 6 installed on your machine?

If not, is it possible for you to install it from: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk6downloads-1902814.html ?

In its ‘bin’ folder there is a utility that can be used to dump all threads for a give Java VM.

Run first " GUIComposer.exe -debug -vmargs -Dgc.webApp=modem_m”.

From the ‘bin’ folder of the Java JDK there is a utility - jvisualvm.exe.

When you run it you will see on the left pane all running JVMs – one of them is GUIComposer.exe – you can check the process id.

You can select the GUIComposer JVM node and then context menu “Thread dump”.

You can do three-four dumps with a different of 5 to 10 seconds.

You can save each dump as a separate file and attach it to this forum thread.

May be there is some clue about the problem.

This is what is in the left pane. None say GUIComposer. I did enter the command in the console and have it running.

VisualVM will not display GUIComposer. 

It displays process ids ( pid 1234). 

To find the process id of GUIComposer you need to use Windows Task Manager.

That is the correct process ID for GUIComposer. However, when I select it the "Thread Dump" option is nulled out in the toolbar. Pic shown.
