DRV10963 for Control of 120 Degree Motors

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV10963

Hi,

The DRV10963 meets all of my requirements for a 3-phase BLDC controller, but i am concerned about the 180 Degree Sinusoidal control scheme working with my 120 degree motor. Is there an APP note that discusses this, or some information you can give on how this would work?

BR,

Lucas McKeehan

  • Hi McKeehan

Usually 3 phase BLDC fan motor will have a BEMF waveform between trapezoid and sinesoid. So it will be also good to use 180 degree driver to drive a 120 degree motor, and still you will get greatly benift from ultra low driving noise and torque ripple.

    Thanks.

  • if your motor is truly trapezoidal you will lose a bit of torque/efficiency with a sinusoidal technique, but in these typical fan like applications it is usually a don't care, and the trade off for lower noise is a bigger positive.
