DRV8821 output suddenly disappeared

Dear Sir/Madam:

I encountered a problem in our new PCBA with DRV8821. It works in previous PCB version, and there are some modification on other circuit, and DRV8821's RESETn connnection (to high voltage now). Now when I start rotate the stepper motor, it will start to run. It is suppose to run for long time, but after a few seconds, the stepper motor stopped. From the oscilloscope, we find there are waveform at first, but it disappeared after a few seconds.

What are the possible reason for this problem?

    Hi Huiqi,

    Don't know the dedailed changes in layout of your previous and current PCB, but below advise is always need to pay great attention to.

    Please make sure that the VM caps are placed close to VM and GND pin with wide tracks.
    Also please make sure the Thermal PAD is well soldered to the ground copper and with a big spread.

    You can check those first, if problem still there, please back and better with some pictures shows the schematic and layout.

    I had the same problem with DRV8825 (similar topic: http://e2e.ti.com/support/applications/motor_drivers/f/38/t/267127.aspx ) and as mentioned above VM capacitors were a problem. You can also try to run a motor with lower voltage power supply.

    Thanks for the reply.

    I did more investigation, and find the problem actually isn't in the hardware. One data in the firmware is wrong, and actually the stepper is stopped by firmware. That data is correct by default, but when it is written, the data is wrong. So this problem is solved. Thanks again.
