DRV8801 reversing direction on the fly

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8801

We are using the DRV8801 to drive a small 12V motor to move some lever via gears. I need to find out if there are any implications in cases when changing direction without turning the enable off when changing the phase.

For example, we turn the enable on to to move forward. At some time we find out we went too far and just turn the phase on to reverse direction.

Can it be done without causing any damage?

  • Pete,

In DRV8801, current through the output full-bridge switches and all N-channel DMOS are regulated with fixed off-time PWM control, also  device has over-current protection so  you can go ahead with changing Phase while Enable is on, without worrying about damaging the device.

Only thing is to observe that for some initial cycle after phase change, depending upon motor speed and loading conditions, sometimes (not necessarily always) device may go into over-current protection cycle with 1.2-ms period (Tocp), as shown in figure 6 of data-sheet.
