What is ambient temperature?

When I need to measure the ambient temperature of ICs for simulation or derating purpose, where should I put the temperature sensors?  I surpose the location should be the air above the component. But how much should be the gap between the case of the componet and the sensors? 5mm? 1cm? or can I just use the case temperature as the ambient temperature for these low power ICs?

  • Hi Hebe,

The environment used to measure ambient temperature is described in the JEDEC standard (JESD51-2a).

To the left side of the forum, there is a link to various resources. One of them is the "PCB Thermal Calculator & App Notes". At this site, there is a wealth of information from our packaging experts.

FYI, one of the links on the "PCB Thermal Calculator & App Notes" page is "Methods of Estimating Component Temperatures". I hope you will find this useful.
