Anyone Knows about a high speed stepper driver from ti?

Hello Everyone,

I am using DRV8711 for driving my stepper motors. I am able to successfully rotate the motor at a speed of max 800 RPM. I want a driver which can drive my motor at even higher speed. So can anyone suggest a pre - driver  from TI and also any closed loop stepper pre - drivers from TI?

Also I had searched on the internet to find some drivers which require an AC supply of 60V. They guarantee that their driver is capable of spinning the motor at more than 1000 RPM (Upto 2000 RPM). I wanted to know what extra did they do so that they can achieve such high speed?

  • There are many factors that come into play when determining the max speed of a stepper motor. Many times this speed is limited to how much power you can pump into the coil (determing the strength of the field). Since to move a stepper motor you are pulling along the rotor. The faster you can pull the rotor, the higher the achievable RPM.

    The DRV8711 is the only stepper pre-driver in TIs portfolio at the moment.

    I do not have any experience with AC powered drivers. Someone else might chime in that knows more.

    Have you considered using a brushless or brushed motor? Why use a stepper motor for such high speeds?

     

  • Hi Mahesh,

    To get the highest RPM from a stepper, it helps to increase the voltage (VM), use a fast enough decay mode, and enable microstepping for more controlled movement.  The motor design is also a big factor.

    I agree with Nick that BLDC may be a better choice.  We're developing a new BLDC predriver that has a simple input interface and other nice features.

    I was able to run stepper at 1500 RPM and even upto 2000 RPM using DRV8818. If torque and high step accuracy is not an issue, then you can think of using 3.75 or 3.6 deg. motor. 

    Why use a pre-driver when TI offers so many integrated drivers up to 3.5A of continuous current (I suppose)?
