DRV8412 for stepper and BLDC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8412, DRV8312

Regarding the DRV8412 dual full H bridge stepper driver, I have seen older revisions of the data sheet that show that use of 3 of the half bridges used for BLDC motor control. Current revisions of the spec no longer show this. Why did this change?

Is there a better recommendation for a single device that can be used for stepper and BLDC (brushless)?

  • Hi Tom,

I don't know the history of why this changed, but there are now devices available for BLDC and Stepper.

The DRV8312/32 are the BLDC equivalents of the DRV8412/32. The difference is one half bridge.

BLDC users can save a little by using the DRV8312/32.

If you need a device that can handle both stepper and BLDC, the DRV8412/32 can do so.

  • Tom,

DRV8412/32 can be used to drive BLDC motors in field control oriented or sinusoidal  control mode utilizing 3-half bridges but it can’t be used with Trapezoidal or 120-degree commutation control.

The reason is that there are only one RESET per full bridge so it each half-bridge cannot be independently disabled. I think that may be reason BLDC figure is removed in new version of data-sheet to avoid confusions.

    Best Regards
