Questions of DRV8832

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8824, DRV8832

I would like to confirm tenperature and FET characteristics.

1. Do you have the data for the derating of temperature (graph or rating data)?

2. Do you have  SOA (Safety operating range: VDS-ID of FET inside of IC) data?

Best regards,

Atsushi Yamauchi

  • Hi Yamauchi-san,

For reference, please look page 8 at the DRV8824 datasheet. Figures 4 and 5 have been added.

The DRV8832 will eventually be updated with this information? Is this what you are looking for?

For SOA, the device has built-in overcurrent and thermal protection to protect itself. Assuming adequate thermal heatsinking, the device can run 1A DC/RMS.

  • Dear Rick-san,

    Thank you for your reply.

    I'm sorry I could not explain thermal raiting. I would like to need like;

    or   .

    Can you provide it?

    Best regards,

    Atsushi Yamauch1

  • Dear Rick-san,

I found the dissipation rating table of the same package TPA0243.

Can I use it for this device?

    Best regards,

    Atsushi Yasmauchi

  • Hi Yasmauchi-san,

These numbers do not directly apply because the DRV8832 has current limiting capability internally.

At 25C, the same maximum current is allowed prior to overcurrent protection. The overcurrent protection can trip as low as 1.3A. So the power dissipated at 25C is .76W @ 1.3A, and the power dissipated at 85C is .87W @ 1.3A.

The device will provide current until it the internal junction temperature exceeds 150C. Once exceeded, the device will protect itself by disabling the outputs and signaling a fault through the nFAULT output.

In a new system, the nFAULT pin is usually the best indication of safe operation range. If there is little copper and thermal area, the device can overheat quickly. If the copper plane is very large, the device may never reach the thermal shutdown limit.
